Daniel Rogers Davidson was born January 12, 1820 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania and died March 18, 1884 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was buried after March 18, 1884 in Hill Grove Cemetery in Connellsville.
He was a child of William Davidson and Sarah Rogers. He married Margaret Clark Johnston on December 25, 1846 in Connellsville.
The supplied notes and Davidson Genealogies page call him Colonel Daniel Rogers Davidson. Later supplied notes indicate that he held the title during the Civil War. In June 1861, after the first land battle at Philippi, Daniel formed a cavalry unit in Connellsville that joined Union troops traveling by railroad toward Grafton, Virginia.
Daniel left school at about age 16, when his father gave him charge of the northern part of the family farm. He made a success of the farm, discovered coal on his land, and became deeply involved in the Pittsburgh and Connellsville Railroad. He later became involved in the coke industry in southwestern Pennsylvania.
He established the Love Sewing Machine Company in Rochester, Pennsylvania. In 1874 he was president of the Shoe and Leather Bank in Pittsburgh, and he aided in organizing the Pittsburgh National Bank of Commerce and the Commercial National Bank of Pittsburgh. He also owned cotton plantations near Baton Rouge, Louisiana and had gold and silver mining interests in Colorado.
Daniel moved with Margaret and eight living children to Beaver County, Pennsylvania around 1870. Following a Pullman car accident and illness, he went to Hot Springs in January 1884 to recover. He died there after about two months, and his body was returned to Connellsville, where he was interred next to four children who had died as infants.
Daniel's will was probated in 1886.
Daniel and Margaret had twelve children: John Davidson, Sarah Norton Davidson, Charles O. Davidson, William J. Davidson, Florine Davidson, Alexander Johnston Davidson, Elizabeth Rogers Davidson, George Davidson, an unnamed daughter Davidson, James Johnston Davidson, Louis Rogers Davidson, and Frederick Davidson.
